Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work in Portugal once I have the D7?
Ironically, yes. While the initial visa application strictly demands *passive* income to qualify for entry, once you arrive in Portugal and receive your final Residency Title from AIMA, the card grants you the legal right to engage in professional activity locally within Portugal.
Does this lead to EU Citizenship?
Yes. The D7 is one of Europe's most famous pathways to citizenship. After holding legal residency for **5 continuous years**, you are eligible to apply for Portuguese (EU) citizenship, provided you can pass a basic (A2) Portuguese language test.
What is the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) tax regime status?
Historically, D7 holders benefited from zero taxes on foreign pensions via the NHR. Portugal has heavily modified this. The classic NHR ended in early 2024. While a specialized 'Tax Incentive for Scientific Research and Innovation' replaced it, standard retirees no longer easily receive sweeping 0% tax exemptions.
