Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 'Single Permit'?
It is a combined residence and work permit. You apply for both at once through your employer. Once approved, you receive a biometric residence card that states your right to work.
How long does a decision take?
The statutory limit is 120 days. If the authorities exceed this, it may be legally presumed as a 'Tacit Refusal', although regions often issue the permit shortly after the deadline.
Does my family have work rights?
Yes. Spouses and partners of Single Permit holders have 'unrestricted access' to the Belgian labor market and can work for any employer.
What happens if I lose my job?
You must inform the authorities immediately. You typically have 90 days to find a new employer who can secure a new Single Permit on your behalf.
Do I need to speak French or Dutch?
For the work permit itself, no. However, to apply for Permanent Residency after 5 years, you must prove Level A2 proficiency and complete an integration course.
