Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the D8 and the D7?
The D7 was notoriously used by digital nomads for years. The Portuguese Government has strictly segregated them. The D8 is exclusively for active remote income (salary/freelance). The D7 is now rigidly restricted *only* to passive income (pensions, stock dividends, real estate rental yields).
What is the 'Short-Stay' vs 'Residency' D8?
The D8 has a structural fork. If you want to stay in Portugal for less than 1 year, you apply for the Short-Stay visa (which operates similarly to a regular Schengen extension). If you intend to relocate indefinitely, obtain residency, and chart a path to citizenship, you apply for the Residency track, triggering the mandatory AIMA (Immigration Agency) appointment inside Portugal.
Can I bring my family on the D8?
Yes. The Family Reunification process applies. You must increase your solvency capital in your Portuguese bank account by 50% for your spouse and 30% for each minor child. Your spouse is legally permitted to work for Portuguese companies or remotely.
