Frequently Asked Questions
Can I switch from an L to a B permit?
Yes, but only if you secure a permanent contract AND there is a quota available in the B permit tranche. This is treated as a new application.
Is insurance provided by the employer?
Generally, no. You are responsible for taking out Swiss health insurance (KVG) within 3 months of arrival. Non-occupational accident insurance is typically covered by the employer if you work >8 hours/week.
Does the L permit count towards residency for a C permit?
Usually, yes, provided you continuously reside in Switzerland and eventually transition to a B permit. However, short stays with gaps may be excluded.
Can my family join me on an L permit?
It is significantly harder than with a B permit. Cantonal authorities have much more discretion to refuse family reunification for short-term L permit holders.
What if my contract ends early?
The L permit is tied to the contract. If the contract ends early, your right to reside also ends shortly thereafter, unless you find a new employer who can secure a new quota allocation.
