Frequently Asked Questions

How much can I work under the WHV in Portugal?
You can work generally for the duration of the visa. However, it is structurally designed for temporary and casual work (e.g., hospitality, tourism, agriculture) rather than permanent full-time corporate employment.
Can I extend the stay?
For specific bilateral partners (like Australia and Canada), Portugal sometimes allows an extension of up to 12 additional months, bringing the total permitted duration to 24 months, provided the initial visa conditions haven't been violated.
Can I convert the WHV into a D8 or D3?
Unlike the seamless D-visa tracks, converting a temporary Youth Mobility visa directly into a permanent residence track from within Portugal is notoriously combative and often rejected by AIMA. It conventionally requires returning to the home country to execute a fresh D-visa application.
