Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries can apply for Spain's Working Holiday Visa?
Spain has bilateral youth mobility agreements with Australia (18–30), Canada (18–35), Japan (18–30), New Zealand (18–30), South Korea (18–30), and Argentina (18–30). EU/EEA citizens do not need this visa — they have automatic freedom of movement.
Can I extend or renew the visa?
No. Spain's Working Holiday Visa is non-renewable and non-extendable. The maximum authorised stay is 12 months from your entry date. After that you must leave Spain — there is no pathway to convert it to a long-term permit under this route.
Can work be my primary purpose?
Technically no — the primary purpose of the visa is tourism and cultural exchange, with work permitted as a secondary activity to supplement travel funds. In practice, there is no restriction on how many hours you work, but the visa does not constitute a formal work permit — your employer may still need to register you with Social Security (Seguridad Social).
Is there an annual quota?
Some bilateral agreements (e.g. Australia) operate under annual quota caps. Once the quota for your nationality is filled for a given year, applications are paused. Apply as early as possible at the start of each calendar year to secure a slot.
Where do I apply?
At the Spanish Embassy or Consulate in your home country. You cannot apply in Spain itself. The application must be submitted from outside Spanish territory, and you must enter Spain within 90 days of visa issuance.
Can I bring my partner or dependents?
No. The Working Holiday Visa is a solo visa — you are explicitly prohibited from travelling with dependent children or financially dependent partners under this route. Each eligible applicant must apply individually.
